In 2015, the Lake Cowichan Town Council commissioned an ‘Age Friendly’ report to forecast future needs for the aging population in Lake Cowichan and surrounding communities. Many citizens reported that their aging loved ones had to move to Duncan or further to find economical and available accommodations. The need for additional affordable housing for our local aging population was highlighted.
With the support of the Town’s Advisory Planning Commission, a group of local citizens formed a committee to address this need and on August 17, 2018 the Cowichan Lake Elder Care Society was incorporated, and on June 30, 2021 it became a registered Charity. The name Lakewood Manor emerged from our respected relationship with Cowichan Lake and the wooded wonderlands that surround us.
Two building lots adjacent to the library downtown were gifted to the Society by the Town and a third required lot was purchased through generous donations from the Providence Village Housing Society and the Cowichan Lake Community Forest Co-Op. Securing the land for the project enables the Society to further pursue Regional, Provincial and Federal funding for the $XX million dollar project.
The need for affordable housing for our aging neighbours persists today. Waiting lists continue at the other two Senior Independent Living facilities in town, Evergreen Place and Olson Manor. Lakewood Manor’s 30 suites are needed NOW and will be filled quickly upon completion. Regional, Provincial and Federal funding will not be enough to complete the project. Please help us with a donation to support the costs of construction, facility readiness and minor operating expenses.
